A Green Las Vegas
Posted On: 10/21/2009 03:47 PM

What does Mayor Oscar Goodman of Las Vegas have to say about being green?

Blazing neon lights 24/7, the world’s most grandiose fountains, gridlock on Las Vegas Boulevard, frigid indoor air over millions of square feet when it’s a hundred and ten outside ... not exactly a poster boy for sustainability.  Name the top ten green cities in America -- I’ll bet Las Vegas would not make your shortlist.

Well, think again.  After meeting with officials from the City of Las Vegas to learn more about their green initiatives for our Sierra Club Green Home Web site, I must conclude that America’s adult playground is making a sincere effort to embrace sustainability.  And the major casinos have actually been pioneers in energy saving techniques – with the power and water bills they generate, it makes economic as well as altruistic sense for them.  “What Happens In Vegas Stays In Vegas” but it might be beneficial for the casinos to get the word out about their green initiatives.

I'm so happy that Las Vegas is trying to stop sucking up all the natural resources that could be better utilized elsewhere. We here in the rest of the state of Nevada have another incentive for conservation efforts in Vegas, namely "you can't have our water!!!" Sooner or later the lifestyle of that fair city is going to have to come to a screaching halt as they have used up what little water the area can provide for itself and are in the process of highjacking more acre feet from other states-all to provide swimming pools and fountains for the wealthiest property owners of that city. States such as California and Arizona have fought vigorously to preserve their water rights against Vegas takeovers with enough energy that Clark County has deffered and is now attempting to drain the aquifers of neighboring counties to their north. News for you, Vegas, not without a fight! We out here in the "cow counties" of Nevada are very jealous of our childrens future and are not about to let Las Vegas steal that from us. So Vegas, get your conservation together or start packing up. You can't have our water!
