In one of my more off-beat moments I came up with the vision of a string of Stirling heat engines along the Humboldt River powering a series of generators. Utilizing the geothermal potential of this extremely active geological area for heat while using the cold river water for cooling could give at least this local area a source of almost free electicity for years to come. The only drawback I see is some years the Humboldt runs dry so there would have to be an alternative cooling mechanism available for those times.

Interesting factoid: The Humboldt River is the longest, and crookedest, river in the USA. It doesn't go anywhere, though. From just outside of Wells, Nevada in Elko County the river runs for over 3,000 river miles only to end up running out into the Humboldt Sink playa and drying up in the desert sun. Pretty wierd, eh?

Yes, Lamoille is an enchanting place and such a suprise to those who haven't taken the time to get off the beaten path in this wonderful state.  At one time there was a hydroelectric plant supplying power to the small town of Lamoille, but catastrophic flooding in the canyon made the plant untenable so it was abandoned. You probably saw the "Power House" campground during your visit. Speaking of geothermal-there are hotsprings not too far from the Harrison Pass turnoff as you travel along the Ruby Valley road. Some rancher, way back when, made a nice picnic spot there and I've spent many a lazy afternoon floating around in the warm waters after a tough day catching bass at the lake.

I didn't know that about the Humboldt, and it is pretty intereating. I visited Lamoille Canyon two years ago in the winter time and fell in love with the natural beauty of the area. Also loved, ruby lake. So much to see in Nevada.
