The energy that is produced by the sun is clean, abundant and free. In fact, the sun produces enough energy to supply and support the whole world. The light that comes from the sun contains photons. When these photons are captured by solar paneling they are converted into an electrical current. The resulting electrical current can then be harnessed and used as a power source. Large crystals composed of silicon can produce this current from sunlight yet it is an expensive process when used in large-scale applications. Solar energy is not widely for this reason. There is a great deal of research and development currently being undertaken in the solar technology industry. The major challenge that the industry is facing is being able to manufacture eco friendly technology which is affordable to the everyday consumer.
How Solar Energy is Captured
Solar lights are designed with some very basic parts. The part most prominent feature in the design is the solar panel. Most solar-powered lights have four solar cells that are connected together in a sequence. Beneath the solar panel is usually a rechargeable Ni-Cad battery, a central control panel and one or more Llight Emitting Diode (LED) bulbs. Solar lights switch on and off as a result of a photocell sensor which detects the amount of available sunlight. The solar panel is commonly wired to a diode and then to the Ni-Cad battery. When the solar light is positioned under sunlight during the day, the solar panel collects the energy and stores it within the Ni-Cad battery. The battery has enough charge to illuminate the LED overnight and is then recharged by the next day of sunlight.
There are several advantages to choosing solar powered lights over traditional electrical landscape lights.
Solar lights cost nothing to runSolar lights have no adverse effects on the carbon footprint of the property
Solar lights are not fixed and can be moved around to suit the landscape and sunlightSolar lights create a truly magical and endearing ambience in a garden when they are placed amongst the natural landscape
With the tremendous pressures on the Earth's natural resources, solar lights are fast becoming the smart choice for homeowners and landscape designers. Solar lights closely mimic the beauty and design of conventional lights yet they eliminate the need for any form of wiring or electricity. The demand and appreciation for solar energy will only increase in coming years as the global community awakens to the need for sustainable solutions.
