If you’re living on earth you know that water is the life blood of every living creature. Without water life is not possible and without clean water human life is not possible. Filtered purified clean water is absolutely necessary for the living. There are three basic methods for the purification of drinking water. We will get into the science of purification later but for now the important thing is to keep in mind is the condition that the your current water supply.  City or well water that contains chlorine, iron, hydrogen sulfide and other undesirable chemistry needs purification to become healthy and consumable. Typically, North America has enough bad water to go around. Consider that only one percent of all of the water on earth is in drinkable condition!

The characteristics of  water cleanliness can be broken down into three basic categories, particulate, chemical and biological. In most instances water can be purified with one or all three methods of treatment depending upon the specific problem. A complete water quality diagnosis should be made by experts in the field to determine the water quality, which methods of purification are required and to what degree of treatment is necessary. However, for most situations at least two methods of treatment are required.

Water with suspended particulate contamination will require a filter and depending upon the type of suspended particles will determine the type of filter element required. Filters with high degrees of filtration are determined by the “micron size” of the particles being allowed to be stopped or passed through the element. The smaller micron rating the smaller size of particle will be allowed to pass the filtration process. Normally a 100 to 200 micron size particle is about the size of a grain of sand, so 10 micron or smaller particles are a high degree of filtration.

If you’re lucky enough to have water with low or small particulates but are unlucky with different chemicals or smelly water, a carbon filter will be required to help remove the poor taste, bad smell and other harmful chemicals such as chlorine, fluoride, iron etc… Carbon filtration is an important element in water purification, carbon absorbs chemistry present in water leaving behind less contaminated water.

Lastly, if you’ve ever heard someone say don’t drink the water when in Mexico it’s probably because there is bacteria present in the drinking water from animal or human waste that has contaminated the water and was not properly cleaned and that is very toxic. Ultraviolet purification is a great effective way to easily purify water without adding harmful chemicals such as chlorine. Ultraviolet light kills bacteria.
