I thought Jimmy Carter had the right idea when he was promoting energy conservation back in the 70's. I guess Americans just didn't think it was too important because we put Ronald Regan into office and tried the trickle down theory of economics. Well, the American market did not find renewable energy, conservation, or global warming very profitable so we myopically refused to advance too far in a different direction.
We built bigger and bigger cars, finding loop holes the size of Texas for automotive mileage standards to be lowered. Now, it is my hope that we do not stop the research and development of new ways for humanity to get around. Transportation means that do not pollute the environment the way hydrocarbons do, getting us to work, school, shopping, and such in style and efficency.
I am hopeful that when Mr. Obama takes office, the direction we take as a nation is one envisioned by President Carter. I hope that as gasoline prices fall, we don't become complacent. Here's to a Greener future in 2009 and beyond.
