In 1980, I became an apprentice at the Saratoga Community Gardens, INC, a non-profit Bio-Dynamic, Organic, Sustainable demonstration farm in the South Bay area of California. What a wonderful experience for a bunch of 20 year olds, we were carefree and naively believed in the future direction of our society.
We built a passive, gravity fed solar hot water heater out of 2 x 4's, phylon sheeting, an old water heater tank, and flat black corrugated metal and copper piping. It sat at the entrance to the farm, right next to the wooden port-a-potty.
28 years later, I am hopeful for our planets future. The last few years has seen some political anger in our ranks and in this, I remain optimistic for a redirection of our nations energy and social focus.

I would have to say that my energy interests lie in the area of getting humanity to slow down and make improvements to our quality of life by showing options that are based on rational choices. In this country this would begin with many projects aimed at fixing our existing infrastructure, like the electrical grid used to distribute the generated power, modernizing the elements to increase its efficiency. Then, develop solar power projects on the scale currently happening in the southwest desert. Next, commercial scale wind turbine development in high wind energy areas. After this, we would build our wave energy generators off our coasts.
This will spill over to other countries as they see our successes and mishaps, encouraging both developed and developing nations to spur their own renewable energy grids.
